It’s likely overkill for those interested only in some basic tablet modding, but the folks from Liquidware (no strangers to the DIY scene) have a new bit of kit that should please those looking to take on a more ambitious project. Dubbed simply Amber, the kit is described as “80 percent of the way to a tablet” — you’ll get a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a 7-inch capacitive display and a customized version of Android 2.3, but no pesky casing to get in the way of any other additions you see fit to add. That convenience comes at a bit of a cost, though. The Amber will set you back anywhere from $983 to $1,674 depending on the kit you choose. Head on past the break for a quick look at it on video.

There’s been quite a bit of brouhaha over at xda-developers lately about changes HTC’s made to the way multitasking behaves on the One X compared to stock Ice Cream Sandwich. We’re not just talking about obvious UI tweaks here — Sense 4‘s horizontal, card-like arrangement vs. Android 4.0′s default vertical list — but actual differences in memory and task management. While we’re not running into any problems with our One X review unit, some users have noticed that background app are getting terminated too aggressively, so we reached out to HTC for comment. Here’s what the company said:
HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community’s input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers’ experience with our devices. That said, multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.
There you have it. HTC’s definitely implemented some multitasking tweaks on handsets running Sense 4. Perhaps this is why battery life is so impressive on AT&T’s One X? While we don’t believe this is going to be an issue for most people, there’s always the option of installing custom ROMs now that the phone’s been rooted.

If you aren’t already accustomed to Japan’s regular deluge of device announcements, brace yourself: NTT DoCoMo just stepped forward with 17 new phones, as well as a mobile WiFi hotspot and a tablet. Throw a stone at the pile of hardware, and you’re likely to strike something running Ice Cream Sandwich — with the exception of the WiFi hotspot and a single handset designed for kids, every device on the list is running Android 4.0. Among the hodgepodge of handsets, DoCoMo is offering ten dual-core devices with screens ranging from 3.7 to 5-inches, a 10.1-inch 1.2Ghz dual-core slate, camera sensors of all sizes (from 8 megapixels to 13, that is) and a curious “Raku-Raku smartphone” that promises the “sensation of pressing actual keys” to smartphone newbies. The lineup’s superstars, however, can all be found in DoCoMo’s “NEXT” series of smartphones, bolstering the carrier’s Xi LTE service with heavy hitters like the Galaxy S III, the Optimus Vu, Sony’s Xperia GX and the Tegra 3 touting Arrows X. Hit the source links to check out the smartphone smorgasbord for yourself, or read on for our list of the never-before-seen ICS devices (they’re all waterproof!) as well as DoCoMo’s official press release.

The auto industry has long been a cyclical business, and though this last trough was a deep one, the coming boom has economists excited. According to Bloomberg, the auto industry’s comeback contributed fully half of the 2.2 percent national economic growth in the first quarter of this year. Auto sales are on target to top 14 million vehicles this year, the best pace in four years.
Production is up at all three domestic carmakers, which has a ripple effect throughout the economy. Bloomberg cites Chad Moutray, chief economist of the National Association of Manufacturers, who estimates that every dollar spent on a new vehicle leads to an addition $2.02 in economic activity. The industry’s share of gross domestic product for the quarter was 2.8 percent, which is nearly as high as it was in 2007, before the economic crisis that devastated the industry, according to the report.
Yet despite the rise in fortunes for carmakers, stock prices have yet to follow suit. A key automotive index is up just 1.5 percent so far this year, but is down 31 percent in the past 12 months, according to the report. The U.S. Treasury Department recently indicated that because of lagging stock prices, it would not be divesting its share of General Motors stock anytime soon.

We’re used to batteries powering a lot of devices, but the University of California, Riverside is upping that a notch by charging up a whole floor’s worth. The school’s Winston Chung Global Energy Center is walking the eco-friendly walk and has started using a huge bank of rare earth, lithium-ion batteries from Balqon to produce 1.1 megawatts, enough to keep Winston Chung Hall’s entire first floor humming along while tapping renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. The batteries bank their energy overnight, keeping the throngs of students happy without having to recharge as much or use the regular power grid as a fallback. While it’s considered a testbed, the university’s giant battery is considered a blueprint for cellular towers and the green power sources themselves — the combination of which could keep your smartphone up and running with a lot less of an environmental hit.
[Thanks, Justin B]

How much is a Pebble Beach ‘Best in Show’ car worth? We’re about to find out. A 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet (that’s quite a mouthful) is looking for a new home and is headed to auction at RM’s Monterey sale in August. The car underwent an extensive restoration in 2001 and debuted at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it took home first prize. Since then, the Horch has gone on to win many other accolades including the Best in Show at the New York City Concours (2005), the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance (2006), the Glenmoor Gathering (2008), and the Ault Park Concours (2009).
So what makes this particular car so special? Horch, one of the original four German automakers of the Auto Union that lives on today as Audi, produced some of the most luxurious vehicles in the early part of the century. The 853A Cabriolet, one of the company’s last efforts, is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars of its era and came with many modern features including vacuum-boosted hydraulic brakes, overdrive in all four gears, and a unique hydraulic jacking system. This particular example features unique coachwork by Erdmann & Rossi and is one of just three known to currently exist.
You can read more about the 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet and the auction in RM’s press release after the break, and you can see our photos of the car at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the gallery above.

Remember Apple’s new iPad WiFi + 4G? Well, forget that moniker, as this variant of the company’s latest slate has been quietly re-dubbed as the iPad WiFi + Cellular. As noticed by 9to5Mac, the change occurred within the last “24-48 hours” across many of Apple’s region-specific webstores (update: and retail locations), including (but not limited to) those for the US, UK, Australia, Canada and various countries in Asia. If you’ll recall, in many regions the best you’ll get out of the slate is HSPA-connectivity, even though it’s also equipped for LTE — something that Apple itself had considered good enough to market it as 4G despite offering refunds to customers in Australia who (like many others) couldn’t officially partake in its LTE. Interestingly, 9to5Mac also notes that a similar change hasn’t made its way over to the iPad 2, which still has its cellular-equipped variant named, iPad 2 WiFi + 3G. We’ve reached out to Apple for comment, but the meantime, feel free to hit up the source links below for more insight.

Facebook has been making a lot of promises during a tour to drum up interest in its ever-nearing IPO, but the one gadget-heads have been wanting to hear the most, a commitment to its mobile apps, has been elusive — until now. Everyone’s favorite hooded CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is telling investors in his home ‘burg of the San Francisco Bay that mobile is front and center in his company’s plans. We’re hoping that means new app features, although Zuck is likely referring to money-making as well: shareholders are jittery knowing that Facebook makes most of its money on web ads that it’s not running on smartphones and tablets. Paid titles in App Center will go a long way towards scratching that itch, mind you. As for us, we’ll just be happy if Facebook takes less than a year and a half to produce a major tablet app.

Granted, Apple and Google aren’t quite the bosom buddies they once were, but how far is Cupertino going to free itself from the Android-maker? Well, Apple’s picked up a number of mapmakers and is now reportedly getting ready to unveil a Google map competitor for iOS. 9to5Mac is reporting that the mapping solution will be in-place for the next major version of the mobile operating system, combining technologies gathered with the acquisition of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9. The star of the show is said to be the 3D mode with graphics nabbed from C3. All Things D has “independently confirmed” the forthcoming app reinvention, with sources adding, (hopefully a bit hyperbolically) that it will “blow your head off.” According to rumors, we’ll be finding out a lot more come WWDC next month.

While visiting the Innovation Showcase at CTIA 2012, we ran into Nick Pudar — OnStar’s VP of Business Development — who was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time. We sat in the LTE Skype-enabled Chevy Volt on display and discussed such topics as OnStar FMV, RelayRides and smart grids — wherein power utilities can (with the customer’s consent) send a signal to a vehicle to control when it charges. The idea is to allows utilities to maximize grid efficiency and minimize power spikes while giving customers options for when to charge the vehicle — like when the rates are the lowest or when the power generated is coming from renewable energy, for example. Pretty neat stuff, eh? Watch our video interview for all the (pardon the pun) juicy details.

Sprint may already count the LG Optimus Elite among its roster of smartphones, but today that handset is finding a second home at Virgin Mobile. The $150 Gingerbread-powered device is now up for pre-order, and Virgin says it will start shipping on May 15th. Though the 3.5-inch HVGA display, 800MHz CPU and 5-MP rear camera aren’t exactly impressive specs, the Optimus Elite stands out as the carrier’s first phone to include NFC and Google Wallet for mobile payments. Unlike Sprint, which offers a white version, Virgin Mobile will only sell the Optimus Elite in silver. And while the former carrier prices the phone at just $30 after a mail-in rebate, Virgin’s cheaper monthly plans might convince customers that it’s worth shelling out more up front.
